The Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York is hiring a staff attorney in its Canton office to provide civil legal services to low income residents of St. Lawrence County and the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation. The majority of the attorney’s time will be providing services to low income individuals seeking Social Security or Supplemental Security Income benefits and low income people facing loss of their home due to mortgage foreclosure. May also be responsible for providing some general legal services to low income individuals. The attorney will be responsible for providing advice, brief service, community legal education and representation in Social Security Disability and SSI matters as well as impending foreclosures. Will work closely with local agencies providing housing counseling and advocacy. Responsible for recordkeeping and reporting for Disability Advocacy Grant and Foreclosure Prevention Grant. Qualifications: At least 2 to 6 years prior legal experience or equivalent. Admitted to New York State Bar. Demonstrated commitment to public interest law and providing high quality legal services to clients in civil matters. Must be able to make a two year commitment to the Legal Aid Society. Must be able to communicate effectively and work independently and efficiently. Must have a car and valid New York driver’s license. Good computer skills. Prior relevant experience and ability to speak Spanish is a plus. Program Profile: The Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York is a publicly funded law firm which provides free civil legal services to low-income individuals from offices in Canton, Plattsburgh, Amsterdam and Saratoga Springs. The main office is located in Albany. The Canton office is staffed by three attorneys, one paralegal and two support staff. Salary: $40,072 to $48,087 DOE plus excellent benefits.
